NEGATIVE RESULTS AND YOU: THE KEY TO IMPROVING SCIENCE

Did you know that more than 60% of scientific research end up in negative results? And what's worse, did you know that most of them never see the light? The All Results Journals solves these serious problems that Science is currently facing. Help us to make it possible.

In life there are positive and negative things—the good and the bad. This is also apparent in science. While there are some successful experiments, there are many others with negative, unexpected or useless results. In 1879, after many disappointments while working through the process of developing the light bulb, Thomas Edison said: 'I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.' This is the reality of science a reality that is often hidden, disguised, or omitted. This is a central truth that represents an important global problem.
Currently, more than 60% of the results from scientific research are unexpected, wrong or negative. Nevertheless, little is known about these results since traditional journals look for success in proving the hypothesis. This fact shows an unreal image of science and leads to failure— a waste of time and public money in laboratories around the world. Therefore, it is essential that a publication like The All Results Journals exists to publish negative results of scientific investigation.

Why does it occur?

There are lots of factors which comprise the internationally known phenomenon called  '
publication bias'. One example is the fact that a journal will sell better if it includes an article saying 'Researchers found a protein that cures cancer' rather than 'Researchers found 1000 proteins that don't cure cancer'.

There's no doubt that the article describing the protein that cures cancer has a great impact on society (From
SACSIS , we hope with all our heart that this occurs as soon as possible). However, to the scientist who works, for instance, in cancer protemics the article describing 'useless' proteins in the treatment of cancer is also useful since it includes information about what proteins the scientist shouldn't study/select as other researchers have already invested their time, effort and money in them. This way, our future scientists can be more focused, for example, on new 'targeted proteins' and accelerate the hunt for a cure for cancer (and other diseases).

In 2008, The All Results Journals was founded under the motto 'All your results are good results'. It is the first Spanish initiative in publishing negative results with Total Open Access (that is that all its contents can be read without paying). Watch our news report in la Sexta News (in Spanish, sorry):

Thanks to the effort of a group of volunteers (most of them national researchers) and the payment of the majority of expenses by SACSIS  (which, at the same time, is mostly financed by individual/particular donations), both the number of articles we publish and the number of people reading them are increasing , although they are still smaller than other traditional journals since big publishing houses have more money to invest. This growth means our infrastructures are falling behind the required level. Aditionally, the volume of daily operations and promotion for each journal makes it neccesary to employ a person full-time. This is why we are doing this crowdfunding campaign.

Are there any competitors? What makes us unique?

Big publishing houses are currently interested in negative results (you can read  this entry in our blog for more on this movement). Nevertheless, those journals charge a fee to publish the articles in an Open Access format. The All Results Journals is the first international journal with Total Open Access philosophy, in which there is no charge whatsoever to publish or read an article. In fact, we firmly believe that publishing in Total Open Access shouldn't be financed by researchers' money. Our point of view is wider and we cover different areas and sub-specialities of science. The existence of these journals proves that negative results are more important now than ever before. We are the pioneers in Spain and we are filling a huge gap in the scientific publications industrya niche which has plenty of competitors. SACSIS has recently been enrrolled in the  'All Trials' Campaign to protect the publication of negative results in clinical trials. We are creating this crowdfunding project to not only avoid staying behind, but to also have enough resources to compete in the same way as other publications.

What are the BENEFITS of this campaign?

There are a great deal of benefits that come from the publication of negative results through  The All Results Journals:

First of all, it helps avoid the waste of time caused by the repetition of useless or wrong experiments. This is essential in some areas such as medicine and pharmacology, where extensive scientific experimentation is done to discover new drugs and medicines.  It is also very important in clinical studies, especially in new drug validation,  where human subjects are involved. If it's already known that some drugs are useless in the treatment of a specific disease, these trials won't be put into practise. Other scientific areas benefit in the same way if negative results are published.

Secondly, due to saving time and money in research, studies are more profitable and spending is optimized to increase R&D funding there will be more research projects financed. Negative results experiments are available at

The All Results Journals and scientists can find better solutions. In this way, we want to promote an efficient use of public money, since public research represents 70% of worlwide research. Public administrations benefit and scientific progress is faster and greater, resulting in benefits for the entire society.

Thirdly, research speed is enhanced, and

The All Results Journals is the neccesary catalyst to achieve this increase in speed. Such an increase will in turn leat to faster and safer access to new drugs, materials and more sustainable sources of energy. In general, it is expected that faster and cheaper technological improvement in all scientific fields will translate into a better quality of life.

Finally, EVERYBODY will benefit from this campaign, since it would put an end to non-publication of negative results. This campaign will mark a milestone in science as
scientists will adopt a new way of thinking that starts with the acceptance of negative results as a part of science, rather than something that should be hidden or feared. This is the point where everybody (scientists, teachers, researchers, patients, consumers and average citizens) becomes part of the benefit: the improvement of science. It will be possible to conduct scienctific research of a higher quality, without the inefficient use of time or money and with a firm purpose: constant improvement.

What is the scientific community's opinion on this?

WHO WE ARE

The All Results Journals is composed of 4 scientific journals that publish negative results obtained in Biology, Physics, Nanotechnology and Chemistry. Although it was founded in 2008 the first edition of The All Results Journals was launched in 2010 thanks to the support of the Society for the Improvement of Science (SACSIS) , which also became its publishing house. The chief editor of the 4 journals is Dr. David Alcántara, who is in charge of  the entire editorial process and the management of the article review procedure, as well as promotion on social networks and other daily issues of the journals.

SACSIS was founded in 2010 by Dr. David Alcántara with the purpose of promoting, improving and developing science, as well as optimizing public funding in scientific investigation to achieve a better communication in scientific research nationally and internationally. The staff of SACSISa group of  experts in science and technologycount on the help of many volunteers who cooperate with the society and make SACSIS's aims achievable.

Thanks to all of the above, The All Results Journals, has been established as the first journal of negative results with Total Open Access format, -i.e.,  there are no fees to publish or read any of the articles published.

However, we are left behind in comparison with the most recognized journals in terms of distribution and contentdue to a lack of funding. As a part of our incessant fight to be among the top  negative results journals worldwide, we are  launching this fundraising campaign to help us improve our journals and allow us to continue offering our Total Open Access system as well as to improve the services we currently offer to the scientific comunity.

AIMS: WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO?

With this crowdfunding campaign we hope to take our second big step. The first was to create and maintain the journals: now we aim to consolidate our position, and  become the top journals of negative results worlwide. We have established the following goals, with activities planned over the course of the coming year:

  1. Buy a new server to host the journals. We have more readers everyday, and our current server is not big enough to cope. We also need to increase the capacity of the server to host the huge number of articles we receive on a daily basis.

  2. Improve our journals' website design, making it more modern and functional, while also updating its interface to offer a better user experience. In addition to, we are going to convert all our articles to HTML5 format. This will facilitatethe indexing and  SEO positioning  of our published articles, making our authors more accessible. We are also going to add new sharing functions to our articles.

  3. Increase our journals' presence in international engines such as DOAJ and PubMed. We are also going to assign a unique Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to each published article. This process is managed by CrossRef, which applies a fee per DOI and article and an annual membership fee (for the ability to assign DOIs). This crowdfunding campaign includes the cost of two years of subscription to CrossRef and the publication of 40 articles per journal. To increase the visibility of the journals and establish relationships with other international publishers we are also going to join the STM society of scientific publishers.

  4. Increase the scientific content of each journal and of our scientific blog The All Results Journals. To achieve this  aim we have planned the following steps:

    1. Attendance at conferences of different areas (Chemistry, Biology, Physics) to promote the journals.

    2. Improvement of our website positioning (SEO & SEM)

    3. Optimization and maintenance of our social networks (SMO)

    4. Webinars  about the importance of negative results

    5. Promotion of  “Call for papers” of each journal

    6. Press Releases

    7. Writing 'hot-topic' articles

    8. Writing review articles about negative results

    9. Marketing campaigns

  5. Assure the perpetuity of the journals' content through a preservation system (LOCKSS, Lot Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe).

To achieve these aims, we need to hire a person for our media and communication department. This person will be in charge of the creation of new content and will be vital in strengthening our relationships with the media and our users. Currently, thanks to a Santander Grant we are able to count on Paula Ruiz del Portal Vázquez in this department, but we need money to hire her full time. In addition, we need to contract a web designer company to maintain our website. We also need a significant promotional campaign for our 4 journals in specific media (conferences, workshops, seminars, etc). In order to expand our content we need to perform content recruitment campaigns  (“Calls for papers”)  and create our own massive distribution lists (the ones we use currently are very limited).
